We’ve already told you: There are apps that help you delete photos and ones that do the same for screenshots. But even when you use the apps we’ve talked about above, the photos aren’t deleted immediately. It’s the same as how files from PCs aren’t really deleted when you click that Delete button. So if the image you just deleted isn’t really gone, how do you get it back? Alternatively, how do you make sure the image is really deleted? Read on to find out.

How to Recover a Deleted Image in iOS 8

Go to the Photos app and from the Albums tab look for Recently Deleted. Here you’ll see a chronological list of all your deleted photos. It’s the opposite of the Camera Roll; the most recently deleted image is at the top, not at the bottom. So here is how it works. When you delete an image, either via an app or the Camera Roll, it lands here. And stays here for 30 days. Once the 30 days are up, then it is permanently deleted from your device. When you get to the Recently Deleted page you’ll see thumbnails of images with days marked on them. Those numbers show how many days away the image is from permanent deletion. Tapping a thumbnail will give you a fullscreen preview. On the top here you’ll see the date and time the photo was captured. Tap the Recover button to get the image back. If you want to recover multiple images, go back to the thumbnails, tap on Select and tap on the images you want. You can also choose Recover all.

How to Make Sure an Image is Deleted

On the flip side, if you want to delete an image of sensitive nature, how do you make sure it’s not going to be accessible in the Recently Deleted album for everyone to see? Simple – just as there’s a Recover option, there’s a Delete option. And this is the actual Delete Delete option not the fake Delete one. You can delete one image at a time or select multiple images from the thumbnail view. Deleting all the images at once is also possible.
